The rest of the book seems to be about everything going to shit, so coming back to this part of the book I came away with this interpretation of what the critics metaphor is but I don't know what the romantic involvement has to do with anything.Īmalfitano is a metaphor for our anxiety of the future but our inability to act to change anything. I don't think Bolaño is a misogynist because of other parts of the book (in fact I think he's quite feminist) so I'm not sure what this is saying at all. If Bolaño was a misogynist I would say he's showing the degrading of our societies moral fabric as this woman can't choose between two younger men and finally chooses the older and wiser Morini. It's hard for me to tell what the author means here without knowing where he comes from. The romantic involvement of the critics are at the heart of their struggle as Liz flits about in non-committal relationships between the Spaniard and the Frenchman until she eventually settles on the Italian whom she never really had any romantic interests until the last pages of this part of the book. We watch as the critics attempt to find their inspiration only to watch them fail without putting any real effort in. The critics who are not creatives themselves despite some desire to be so are metaphors for our failure as a society to be creative and instead our society's tendency to simply talk about and rework old works rather than create anything new.

PLEASE tell me what I'm missing and why this is a better book than I currently feel like it is. I would welcome someone to tell me what I'm missing. The themes I pick up I feel are so slowly elaborated upon and fail to ask questions of the reader that I feel like I'm sinking slowly upon the theme like dying on a bed of nails. Overall my impression of this book is poor. Sometimes they overlap, sometimes they do not.

I feel like I read with a fairly critical eye, I choose my books carefully and know the difference between books I enjoy Vs. I've recently finished reading 2666 and after grappling with it and putting an honest amount of effort in I'm not sure where I stand.
